  • From the 175,000 persons affected with LTBI, 25% are unaware of their status and only 15% get treated

Mycobacterium bovis

M. bovis, often found in Southern California due to the states proximity to Mexico, is a germ from the bacteria family that can cause tuberculosis.

It is contracted through the ingestion of unpasteurized dairy products, primarily cheese made in unsanitary conditions.

In 2020 San Diego County reported 12% of cases due to M. bovis. Of these cases, 24% were from persons born in Mexico. This is a slight increase from 2019.*
